Transcatheter aortic valve implantation procedure volumes in Europe will grow by an average of nearly 50 percent per year through 2014, according to Millennium Research Group
June 8, 2010—Waltham, Massachusetts— According to Millennium Research Group (MRG), the global authority on medical technology market intelligence, national registry data presented at last month’s euroPCR will drive adoption of transcatheter aortic valve implantation, as illustrated in MRG’s new European Markets for Heart Valve Devices 2010 report. Presented by European physicians at the Paris conference, the encouraging registry results revealed high success rates in addition to acceptable mortality rates and complications in the high-risk patient population considered in the registries.
Physicians from France, Germany, Italy and the UK each presented figures from their country’s national, multicenter, prospective registry. Transcatheter aortic valve implantation devices—first introduced commercially in Europe in 2007—have been shown at a national level to boast high success rates. Although more data was provided for Medtronic’s CoreValve System, similar success rates shown by Edwards Lifesciences’ SAPIEN valve will boost confidence in both devices and generate further interest in the procedure.
“Rapid adoption of transcatheter aortic valve implantations will occur across Europe through 2014 as a result of the highly underpenetrated patient population,” says Dan Whalen, Senior Analyst at MRG. “Like other percutaneous heart valve therapies, the use of transcatheter aortic valve implantation will be mostly reserved for high-risk patients, like the ones considered in these registries, who currently go untreated because their conditions are too advanced to risk the highly invasive tissue or mechanical heart valve replacement options. The new technique will, however, also penetrate the market of these more conventional methods, especially in older patients who would benefit from the less invasive procedures.”
MRG’s European Markets for Heart Valve Devices 2010 report covers France, Germany, Italy and the UK and provides critical insight into emerging trends that will fuel growth in the heart valve device market, including percutaneous heart valve technology. The report also discusses trends in the conventional heart valve device market, including tissue and mechanical heart valves and annuloplasty devices. The report provides a complete breakdown of unit sales, average selling prices, and revenues by device type, including five-year forecasts, up-to-date market shares, and in-depth qualitative insights.
