Asia Pacific Markets for Interventional Cardiology Devices 2010

Author(s):

Introduction:

The Asia Pacific interventional cardiology (IC) device market—comprising sales of coronary stents, percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) balloon catheters, and IC accessory devices—was valued at nearly $3.5 billion in 2009 and will expand through 2014, driven primarily by rising IC procedure volumes. A heightened incidence of coronary artery disease (CAD) and clinical support showing the benefits of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) will fuel these climbing procedure volumes. The patient population will also expand as government funding toward health care infrastructure improves accessibility and affordability for patients across all countries covered. Rising drug-eluting stent (DES) penetration will contribute further to market growth due to these devices' price premium over bare-metal stents (BMS). Market growth will be offset by continued price erosion across all device types and regions due to competitive pricing, high-volume and bundling discounts, and cost-limiting government reforms. The use of alternative methods to PCI for treating CAD and the limited access to health care in certain Asia Pacific regions will continue to impede PCI volumes somewhat. Nevertheless, the Asia Pacific IC device market will expand steadily throughout the forecast period.

Questions Answered in This Report:

  *   Reuse of PTCA balloon catheters and IC accessory devices will remain prevalent throughout the forecast period. How do rates of device reuse compare among the countries discussed? How will rates of device reuse change through 2014? Which devices will experience the greatest change in reuse rates?

  *   DES penetration rates will remain high across the Asia Pacific region, close to market saturation. What explains the significant difference in DES penetration rates among countries in the Asia Pacific region? Which countries will experience the fastest DES unit sales growth over the forecast period? How will changes in average selling price (ASP) affect the relationship between DES penetration and revenues? How will the presence of local competitors in this market affect ASPs of DES?

  *   IC procedures, which include diagnostic angiographies and percutaneous coronary interventions, can be performed in either a same-session or stand-alone procedure. How will the growth rates of same-session and stand-alone procedures compare across the Asia Pacific region? Why will the growth rates of same-session and stand-alone procedures differ between countries?

  *   The Asia Pacific PTCA balloon catheter market will experience steady growth throughout the forecast period. How do the growth rates of PTCA-with-stent and plain old balloon angioplasties compare? What factors will contribute to price erosion, and to what extent will this affect ASPs? Which country will experience the highest market value growth over the forecast period?
