Introduction:
The transcatheter embolization and occlusion (TEO) device market in the US will be driven primarily by positive clinical trial results and new device releases, which will expand the treatable patient population, in turn boosting procedure volumes and therefore unit sales. Market revenue growth will be mainly supported by the embolization coil segment—particularly interventional neuroradiology (INR) coils—the embolization particle segment—particularly radioembolization spheres—and the liquid embolic segment. The US TEO market will, however, be limited by competing treatments, such as surgical clipping and flow-diverting devices for cerebral aneurysms, and surgical hysterectomy and myoectomy for uterine fibroids. Additionally, insufficient patient referrals and a lack of long-term clinical data for some of the newer technologies will restrict total procedure numbers. Nevertheless, the overall US TEO market will experience healthy growth through 2014.
Questions Answered in This Report:
* In early 2012, ev3 is expected to release its flow-diverting device, the Pipeline (acquired in ev3's purchase of Chestnut Medical in mid 2009), which will be used to treat wide-neck intracranial aneurysms.
How will the launch of the Pipeline affect competing technologies, such as INR coils? How will the industry's focus on INR devices affect procedure volumes? How have ev3's mergers and acquisitions affected its market share? * The embolization coil market was the largest TEO device segment in the US in 2009, driven by clinical trial results, the adoption of coated and detachable coils, and competitor focus on intracranial aneurysm treatment.
How will the treatment of intracranial aneurysms change through 2014? How rapidly will coated coils be adopted for INR procedures? How have clinical trial results affected procedure patterns in 2009? * The US embolic particle market will grow steadily through 2014, driven by adoption of radioembolization spheres, drug-eluting beads, and microspheres.
How will clinical trial results affect market growth? Which competitors are in the best position to gain revenues due to market growth? How will this affect the market for polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) particles and other competing treatments?Scope:
